A cross-border European initiative

ORALERT 2025 is developed through collaboration between the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Victor Babes" Timisoara and General Hospital "Djordje Joanovic" Zrenjanin. The project connects prevention, education, research, screening, telemedicine, and digital health for communities in the Romania-Serbia cross-border region.

What is HPV?

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most frequent sexually transmitted viral infection. There are multiple HPV types: some are associated with benign conditions, while others have increased oncogenic risk, including cervical, anal, and oral cancer.

How is HPV transmitted?

  • Direct skin-to-skin contactHPV can be transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact, including oral, vaginal, or anal sexual contact.
  • No visible symptomsThe infection may be present even without visible symptoms.
  • Oral HPV can be silentOral HPV infection can be silent; you may have HPV without knowing it.

Diagnosis

  • HPV in the oral areaENT clinical examination; HPV testing from samples collected from the oral cavity; biopsy if suspicious lesions are present.
  • HPV in the genital areaPap test; HPV DNA test; gynecological examination and colposcopy for women; clinical examination and biopsy for men.
  • HPV in the anal areaClinical examination; anoscopy; anal HPV test; biopsy if suspicious lesions are present.
